Victoria Day, time for Manitoba to get barbequing

grilled-steak1The Victoria Day weekend is the unofficial start of summer in Manitoba and it also marks the beginning of barbeque season. Propane tanks have been filled and bags of charcoal stand at the ready.

One of our goals at Keystone Processors is to have Manitobans make it a tradition to barbeque only the best, high quality, Manitoba-raised steaks. You can buy our steaks in some local stores now. 100 Mile Diet show on Food Network

100-mile-diet-showIn our grandparents’ time, living on a 100 mile diet wasn’t that strange. But today we can just as easily buy New Zealand lamb as Canadian, and we can get pineapples and mangoes from the tropics as conveniently as we can get apples from Ontario or BC.

While this gives us tremendous choice at our supermarkets, many of us have come to learn that having access to farm fresh local produce is almost always best. COOL means possible new border disruption

country-of-originLast month’s decision by the Canadian government to approach the World Trade Organization (WTO) over the mandatory Country-of-Origin Labeling (COOL) is a much appreciated second visit to the WTO on behalf of beef producers in as many months.

The first came after a five year stand-off with South Korea over Korea’s unwillingness to reopen its borders to Canadian beef despite reopening its borders to American beef. Both countries were given the “controlled risk” status for beef by the WTO in 2007 but this new ruling impacted only the U.S./Korea relationship. That battle continues. Read more…
