Fueling up on Protein

August 23rd, 2010

Dane Rauschenberg is an extreme runner, author and motivational speaker who has become an outstanding spokesperson for the beef industry.  Dane is a well-recognized and celebrated celebrity in the health and fitness world who gladly promotes the power of protein. The Team ZIP member ran 52 marathons in 52 weeks, and most recently, a 202-mile solo run in under 50 hours.

“I love beef,” exclaimed Rauschenberg when interviewed after his solo run. “When I was running my 202-mile solo run, I was sending out live tweets. At mile 118, I tweeted, ‘I want a steak.’ I’m definitely a big fan of eating protein through beef, both before and after a race. I try to educate people that beef has a place in a well-balanced diet. This is something that works for me. You always hear about eating a lot of carbohydrates before a race, but for me, it’s protein. Beef isn’t the fatty thing it’s accused of being.”

Without a doubt, Rauschenberg is a strong advocate for the beef cattle industry. As an ultra-marathoner, author and speaker, Dane is well-equipped to share his expertise with health-conscious people. And, if his message is that he enjoys a steak before and after every road race, well, cattle producers can certainly appreciate his efforts to boost beef demand.

Keep running and enjoying beef Dane!

FDA urges limited antibiotics in meat

July 13th, 2010

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration recently issued a warning about the use of antibiotics in livestock and urged meat producers to cut back on them because they pose a serious threat to public health.  The issue is not that the meat itself is harmful to health or that consumers are ingesting antibiotics with their protein, but that the overuse of antibiotics is diminishing the efficacy of crucial medications needed for human use.

According to the Los Angeles Times, for years, evidence has been mounting that extensive use of antibiotics in livestock, particularly to promote growth or prevent the spread of disease in crowded pens, has resulted in the development of drug-resistant bacteria. The FDA wants meat producers to consult more closely with veterinarians to determine when it is prudent to use antibiotics and which ones to use.

Keystone Processors recognizes and agrees with this concern of using antibiotics on livestock, which is why our Natural Prairie Beef brand is hormone-free and antibiotics are only used when necessary. Keystone Processors is focused on raising the best quality cattle with the benefit of top notch farming practices.  Our number one concern is to deliver top quality steaks, tenderloins, roasts, ground beef, burgers and wieners to you and your family.

Let us know what you think of this issued warning.  Do you think it will be effective?

How to Make the Perfect Beef Slider

July 5th, 2010

Need to jazz up your burger? Celebrate this summer with little beef bites that pack big flavour! You see them in restaurants and high-class eateries all across Canada, little bite-sized beefy sensations taking over the menu. These ‘sliders’ or mini-burgers are easy to make, even easier to eat and full of good-for-you vitamins and minerals.

Step 1: For the ideal burger, start with ground beef. For an added flavour twist, try your mini-burgers with lean ground round or sirloin. All of these lean options offer minimal flare ups on the grill, while offering the most in flavour and nutrition.

Step 2: For parties, try making a variety of flavour profiles for guests to enjoy.

Step 3: Follow basic burger recipes and decrease patty by half to two thirds – a flattened meatball in essence.

Step 4: Got the burgers made but stuck looking for itty-bitty buns? Try store bought dinner rolls, thin slices of toasted baguette, a quarter of a whole wheat wrap or use a cookie cutter to cut out rounds from pita bread. You can even just take a hot dog bun and cut it into thirds.

Step 5: Enjoy! Amazing! So much taste and nutrition in one little beef slider!
