FDA urges limited antibiotics in meat

July 13th, 2010

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration recently issued a warning about the use of antibiotics in livestock and urged meat producers to cut back on them because they pose a serious threat to public health.  The issue is not that the meat itself is harmful to health or that consumers are ingesting antibiotics with their protein, but that the overuse of antibiotics is diminishing the efficacy of crucial medications needed for human use.

According to the Los Angeles Times, for years, evidence has been mounting that extensive use of antibiotics in livestock, particularly to promote growth or prevent the spread of disease in crowded pens, has resulted in the development of drug-resistant bacteria. The FDA wants meat producers to consult more closely with veterinarians to determine when it is prudent to use antibiotics and which ones to use.

Keystone Processors recognizes and agrees with this concern of using antibiotics on livestock, which is why our Natural Prairie Beef brand is hormone-free and antibiotics are only used when necessary. Keystone Processors is focused on raising the best quality cattle with the benefit of top notch farming practices.  Our number one concern is to deliver top quality steaks, tenderloins, roasts, ground beef, burgers and wieners to you and your family.

Let us know what you think of this issued warning.  Do you think it will be effective?

4 great ways to get your barbeque ready for grilling season

June 9th, 2010

Don’t enter the season without spring cleaning your most important cooking tool – the barbeque.

Here’s how to tune your grill up on a budget.

Remember how much you used your barbeque last summer? Before you start grilling away to the same extent this year, it’s important to show your grill a little tender love and care. Here are quick, easy and inexpensive tips to give your barbeque the perfect tune up so you can get your grill on!

You’ll need:
• A strong bristle brush
• Mild soap and water

1. Give it a good scrub
With last year’s remnants hanging on to your grill for dear life, it’s due time to give it a good scrub with some mild soap and warm water. If your grill is in bad shape and hasn’t been replaced in a while, consider investing in a new one. Fixed-sized grills and expandable ones are easy to find at any hardware store. If you have cast iron cooking grids, be sure to season them will oil. The oil will help protect the porcelain coating, decrease sticking, and protect damaged or worn grids from rusting.

2. Take it apart
Take apart as much of your barbeque as you can and give the inside (and outside) of your barbecue oven a good scrub with some soap and water and a strong bristled brush, paying extra attention to those spots with lots of grease. For those really tough spots, use a strong degreaser.
