What’s the future of Manitoba’s beef industry?

November 18th, 2009

The Manitoba Cattle Enhancement Council is hosting a special Beef Producers Forum to survey cattle farmers and industry stakeholders about the challenges and opportunities facing our industry today.

The results of the half day session will help MCEC as it prepares its strategic plan for the future. The forum will feature some great speakers participants consider how the Manitoba industry can make its way in an increasingly competitive and intertwined global marketplace. MCEC is looking for Manitoba cattle producers to tell them in their own words how MCEC should prepare itself for the years to come.

Speakers include:

  • Charlie Gracey, former head of the CCA,
  • Todd Churchill, founder of the Thousand Hills Cattle Co., and
  • Ted Bilyea, former executive with Maple Leaf International.

federal-announcementFarmer-owned company to market premium beef from Manitoba farms to the world

Winnipeg, November 2, 2009 – The employees and investors of Keystone Processors Ltd. welcomed Federal Agriculture Minister Gerry Ritz to their plant today as he announced his government has conditionally approved the farmer-owned company for a loan of up to $10 million.

Additionally, Manitoba Minister of Agriculture, Food and Rural Initiatives Rosann Wowchuk joined Minister Ritz to announce that the Manitoba Cattle Enhancement Council would increase its investment in the plant by up to an additional $7.5 million. The money will be used to upgrade the former pork plant on Marion Street into a federally-licensed beef slaughter and processing plant.

“These funds are critical for us to move forward with significant plant upgrades, which will eventually allow us to export Manitoba beef across the country and around the world,” said Kelly Penner, President and CEO of Keystone Processors Ltd. “Our company represents Manitoba farmers taking control of their destiny by owning every part of the value chain from farm gate to our customers’ plates.” Read more…

Lean ground beef on sale

October 23rd, 2009

ground-beef1We’ve put our lean ground beef on sale at only $2.29/lb. That’s a terrific price for 85% lean ground beef made from AA+ Manitoba beef. And our ground beef is Natural Prairie Beef, which means it was raised without the use of hormones and every order can be traced back to the farm it came from.

We put food safety top of mind at Keystone Processors. We believe traceability initiatives are a great idea for cattle producers, for our company, and especially for our customers. Traceability gives cattle producers the opportunity to receive yield data on the animals they send us. That information helps farmers’ breeding programs because they know which animals are yielding the most. That, in turn, helps our company, because we’ll receive some of the best beef in the country.
