Whether it’s participating in a community garden or asking your grocer to carry more local meat and produce, we all have a role to play in encouraging better nutrition and better eating habits.

And if you’re looking for a new way to eat beef this month, why not try these Canadian-style kabobs, made with maple syrup. Read more…

Keystone offers healthy all-beef dog food

March 4th, 2010

dog-food-label_for-blogDogs always know when there’s some good beef being served. Their noses will lead them towards all things beef before they can shake their tails. They’ve got taste buds too and they know when there’s something good to eat.

Fortunately, there’s plenty of meat on a cow that doesn’t always tempt humans, but is major a hit with our canine friends. Keystone Processors Ltd. is pleased to announce it has worked with veterinarians to develop an all-beef dog food.

It is made from lean ground beef, liver and kidney in an 8:1:1 ratio. There’s nothing but Manitoba beef; we don’t use any additives. Read more…

Cattle industry needs continued support

February 18th, 2010

i-love-cnd-beefThis week we read in the Manitoba Co-operator that Canada’s cattle herd fell to its smallest size in 15 years last year. Cattle and calves slaughter levels in Canada were down 3.7 per cent compared to 2008. More alarming was the fall in live cattle exports of 31.6 per cent.

These declines are the result of a number of things. It was the first year of mandatory U.S. country-of-origin labelling (COOL). The continued demand for ethanol has caused a surge in grain prices, which means feed costs have skyrocketed. And the higher Canadian dollar has also cut in to profit margins. The result is fewer cattle and fewer cattle producers. Read more…

Plant plans progressing

January 27th, 2010

keystone-plant-drawing1We continue to make progress with the process of converting our St. Boniface plant into a federally-certified beef packing plant. The team we’ve assembled includes some of the beef industry’s leading experts on engineering and plant design and construction. We’re also working closely with consultants with deep international experience in setting up and running successful and profitable beef plants.

It’s extremely gratifying to hear these experts say they’ve rarely seen better business plans for a beef plant than ours. And it’s even better to hear how they believe the quality of our Manitoba cattle will really make the difference as we pursue our goal of developing premium brands of beef for various consumer markets.

As we finalize the plant blueprints, we’re making sure it will give us the flexibility to target premium niche markets for Kosher and Halal beef immediately. And our intention is to be able to handle multiple species (ie. bison). The plant as we conceive it will give us a near perfect combination of flexibility and efficiency. Read more…

December 23rd, 2009

prime-rib-with-shadow-boxOn behalf of the hundreds of cattle producers who have helped make Keystone Processors possible, we want to wish everyone a very merry Christmas, happy Hanukah and a happy new year too.

We have an exciting year ahead of us as we continue our plant renovations and upgrades. Parts of the old building will need to be torn down to make way for new construction. Our retail store will be “beefed up” (pardon the pun) as we hope to win plenty of new local customers with the great taste of our delicious, premium Manitoba raised beef.

Meanwhile, we are also ramping up our marketing activities, meeting with buyers and potential buyers all over Canada, the U.S. and the world.

As you gather with your friends and family this holiday season, we hope you’ll find peace and health and happiness. And we also hope you’ll enjoy all of that while carving into a succulent piece of Manitoba beef from Keystone Processors.

See you in 2010!

Timely support for Buy Local

December 11th, 2009

greg-selingerWe were really pleased to hear the provincial government has renewed its pledge to support a Buy Local program in Manitoba. The official word came in the speech from the throne last week and it’s very timely indeed. We’re not sure what that support will look like yet, but we’ll be the first in line to sign on to a strong Buy Local program like those that already exist in Ontario and BC and many other places.

Our province has abundant quantities of high quality food. While our climate may not allow us to grow artichokes, broccoli or grapes for wine, we raise some of the best beef, pork and chicken in the world. We also have terrific cheese makers and high quality vegetables, and even some great fruits with our apples and berries.

We believe people should buy local food for the great, fresh taste alone, but there are many other reasons too. Read more…
